celebration is about to begin!!!

Righteo boys and gals. I realised that I have not updated you all about my life last Thursday and I'm terribly sorry about that. As to why I forgot about it last week is beyond even me. However, I am now back to entertain you lovely jibblies, to the best of my abilities anyway.

Some of you may know, I worked through christmas this year, by that I meant, I took the days off christmas eve, christmas day and went to boxing day sale on the morning of 26th. So, as to how hard I ACTUALLY worked is open to discussion. Anyhow, whilst some of you were dining families and entertaining guests, you may think I had a very lonely christmas on my own. But, I actually had a friend from work over to celebrate the joyous day together.

I was quite excited to cook my first ever christmas meal, so excited that I got up at 6 in the morning to prepare the turkey. By preparing, I mean I took it out of the fridge and covered the breast with bacon (courtesy of Delia's turkey video on youtube). The rest of the bird was already stuffed with whatever they were inside from M&S. The point at which I opened the packaging, I found my turkey had NO LEGS! I mean, WHAT!? WHERE DID THEY GO?! I soon came to love the fact it had no legs, as I had enough leftovers for the next two days. All in all, no one got food poisoned.

Second point I want to raise is, on the very same day I woke up at 6 (which is actually on most days, but I'm talking specifically about christmas day here), I got a text from Madame Pillai saying she's getting prepared to go to church at 6:30am. It didn't occur to me at that point, but I though madame Pillai is Hindu......so did she mean temple?????? Some of you may think it is very trivial matter, but I remember odd things and start wondering about it every now and then. Anyhow, I am simply a bit puzzled and will probably text her to find out why that is.

Hmmmm...

My ever so lovely Wednesday-ers,

Indie Receiving The Christmas Treatment
So the festive period has quietened our rambles...I myself am writing this post out of a misguided sense of duty to a little hing I'm doing called project zero. Basically I've set myself a tonne of tasks to complete in one thousand and one days...I'm pretty far through and still have a fair whack to get through =oS

One of my tasks is to blog for a year so unfortunately for you dear reader I will still be rambling on in this little blog until winter of two thousand and twelve =o)

Not Even All Of Them "Present" =oP

This Christmas has been wonderful, a real calm and quiet festive time. For the most part it has just been me, The Trout and my sister, oh and her two dogs! I remember the years when we were eleven in number on Christmas day, now we are down to a rather pitiful three. I am glad though it was nice to see The Trout actually enjoy herself instead of worrying about all of the rest of us! Despite our numbers the tree was still laden with presents...so much so that we lost the use of about a third of our living room having to leave little trails to chairs and the T.V.

Boxing Day Soup!

Boxing day soup also took place which is the highlight of every Christmas for me. Basically all the left-overs, gravy, stuffing, sauces and all, are placed in a large pot and blended/mashed. The final concoction is then boiled to within an inch of its life before being served with freshly made bread. It is a family tradition which has been observed in the family on my The Trout's side for over five generations! I cannot begin to describe the most wonderful taste and texture to you. We in the Black Country have a saying "that'll stick to your ribs" I'm not sure if it translates to other areas but it basically means it will warm you from the inside and fill you up! Porridge is usually a rib sticker as is most winter food! This soup sticks to all your internal organs filling you with festive warmth...it is quite literally a taste of Christmas for me! Shame it looks like diarrhoea!

Since then little has happened really...there is one thing I wish to tell you about but I must refrain from doing so...at least until next week or the week after! Nothing bad just don't want to jinx anything before it happens. =oP

I must wish you all a wonderful New Year as Wednesday misses that as well...if you enjoy New Years then have a brilliant one...if you don't (like myself) then have a pleasant one at least ;o)

Your ever humble blogger,
LJ Alikay

P.S. The epic post was an epic fail ;o)

Flu outbreak, it's not my fault...perhaps

RED ALERT! I had a terrible cold for the past 2 weeks as I have stressed in the previous post. But worry not my fellow followers, I have recovered! However, the rest of my colleagues seem to have caught some sort of virus, whether it be cold, cough, severe headaches, fever, food poisoning, infected by HIV (ok, maybe not HIV), whilst I made a miraculous recovery. They have now blamed it on me acting as a reservoir for the virus for the past two week. But, I'd say the real cause to everyone's problem was probably getting a bit too drunk at the christmas meal and have walked a tremendous amount in the rain until 3 in the morning from pub to pub to bar!

Anyhow, the christmas
was held at a greek restaurant and was amazing. I had mixed meat rissoto, followed by grilled salmon in leon sauce and finished with baclava as dessert. All expenses (including drinks) covered by the lab. This was followed by a momentary plate smashing and dancing in the restaurant, apparently this is greek tradition. Some have even suggested that the greek government is bankrupt because they smash too many plates. Then the 30 odd of us twaddled down the street to the pub until god forbid what time in the morning. Unsurprisingly, there were only 5 of us at work the next day.

I mentioned before I would be going to London this weekend on the reply to SuSu's post, but unfortunately, my fellow collaborator from Boston has decided to prevent me from doing that by posting me something that will arrive on Saturday. That's it for now. Until next time.

Wednesday Once More

Why hello there how the devil are you?

This little update is brought to you by sleep! Something I haven't been getting enough of apparently!

So this week has been pretty humdrum...NOT!! I will start by apologising for last weeks post but I was so ill I just wanted to die add to that the fact I had been woken early in order to travel to my sister's house and there was never a chance of an interesting update!

So I felt a lot better on Thursday which was really really lucky as I had lined up a whole lotta people to see in the United States of Worcs. That's Worcestershire for those of you who don't know =oP. I spent the morning and afternoon of the Thursday catching up with my sister wo I don't get to see very often due to not being able to drive and living 30 miles away from her (better than the 100 or so I used to when I lived in London though!). In the Evening I went "Christmas shopping" with a mate of mine, Frazer, who I used to go to Red Cross with when I lived there. He is a couple of years older than me and we are completely the opposite to each other!

He is cool, fit and attractive and I'm...well I'm not ;o) Plus we seriously like completely the opposite things, he likes Coasteering, Kite-boarding, Hill-walking, Mountain-biking and Surfing...I like T.V., Bed, Sitting down, Spending all day in my PJs and Eating. The thing is it somehow makes the relationship work really well...he tells me about the effects of adrenaline...I tell him what Facebook is!

So we went to a coupe of shops got bored and then went to the pub (hence '"Christmas Shopping"') where I won a glass by picking a card out of a deck and fell in love with a new fruity beer (Which Frazer hated =o) ).

The following day I met up with an old school friend and we went into town once more this time for coffee. 5 hours, 7 cups and a stitch in my side from laughing later; I wandered through the front door (Desperate for the loo =oS) only to realise I had neglected my cheffing duties for that night =o\) Luckily my Sister's BF had stepped in and taken over and as a bonus he didn't even give me away when my Sister returned from work! YAY!

On the Saturday I went to a pub down the road from my Sister's house this time to catch up with some old friends from college over lunch (Yeah I'd pretty much covered every single base!) It was brilliant seeing them again and once more I left with my sides hurting like hell from the rather OTT laughing (we were asked to calm down by the manager of the pub!).

Sunday I returned back to Chateaux de Hulland and spent the day tidying up after The trout while she decorated the lounge (The tree has taken her 4 days to decorate this year...a record braking speed for the trout) I put my foot in it by asking if the tree was finished before it was and have spent most of my time since complementing on how glorious it looks!

Monday I saw my Nan and we did Crimbo card swapping and opening which was fun! Finally, Yesterday was spent trawling the papers and Internet for jobs...and still nothing!

I had a card today of one of my American friends for Xmas and it had a picture of her and her sister (who I also know) in it from her sister's Wedding, which made me smile =o)

I will leave you as I need to get food before the Google+ and Skype dates I have for tonight! Can't wait...love you peeps!

Too Blue To Blog......

Hi Guys,
I really wanted to post some good news this week and fill you guys in on my exciting week BUT unfortunately I just found out that I'll be spending the next 2 years of my life in East Anglia and I'm currently mid-mope so can't muster enough enthusiasm to blog! Now I know East Anglia is not the end of the world or particularly far from London but I'm just a little disappointed not to be in London! T^T

On a brighter note, the "not" boyfriend Gavin is now officially the boyfriend Gavin and I must admit that he is the brightest spot of my week so far (well other than the ball which was fun too!)

I promise to revive my spunk next week and fill you guys in on all the goss that is my life!

Alex and Benny do you guys have any plans to come down around Christmas/new year? It would be so awesome to see you guys!!! x x x

"Also...I regret to inform you I will be arriving snakeless tonight."

Hi people,  it's been a whole another week already? Let me take you through the reader friendly version of the story of the last seven days and I think the best place to start is where I finished up last week....
So pretty much the highlight of my weekend was last Friday evening, where I was lucky enough to have a hastily planned dinner and long overdue catch up with fellow blog contributor SuSu_A  and also attend the 21st birthday party of dramatist/comedian Tammy  T*. Now a more astute person would have taken pictures of these two events, but sadly a combination of having a piss poor (sorry mother) camera phone and being nicely slozzled at the latter conspired against this. However, I hope to paint a decent picture with these words but I did also promise to be reader friendly, hence this....
A 3D artist's interpretation of the term "Slozzled"
But friends rest assured, the state of being the above symbolises came much much later on in the evening and knowing what was to come (because i'm psychic like that) I chose to line my stomach at a Giraffe in Spitalfields. An oddly unimaginative name for a restaurant chain. Maybe there's a story behind it. I think they're originally South African, but still...why Giraffe? why not Rhino? or Gazelle even? Well despite their ambiguous name choice I do always enjoy the food there and Friday was no exception. Added to that the always interesting, robust and entertaining company of SuSu, who fresh from spending time with that Boyfriend who isn't her boyfriend, but actually really IS her boyfriend (YES I SAID IT!), was ripe full of useful relationship advice for this lowly novice. Oh how we laughed, haha.
Anyways, after dinner it was onto Bow and the epicness of Tammy T's party. At a leisurely 2 hours after the stated start time, I think we arrived just about on time and quite rightly the birthday girl was about half way to slozzled by then (see above). I for my part, replete with a bottle of the old pink lady (Rosé to the uninitiated) and some whisky saw fit to join her and the rest of the party guests in that course.
I had a really fun time, and even snuck in a cheeky dance. Thankfully, I'm pretty sure everyone was in an equal or far worse state than I was by then so no one noticed. Before I forget to mention, Tammy T's East London bash was also the first occasion I'd encountered a former, my last in fact, lady friend. Yeah I think, I'll put it that way, lady friend and the fact was despite all the best intentions our brief winter liaison sort of petered out. I knew she'd be there, but because of how we left things I wasn't sure how she'd be.  As it turns out absolutely fine,  we chatted amicably once or twice during the course of the night and that was that.
The rest of my weekend comprised somehow getting up for a 10am Saturday morning hill running session, which was noticeable for me NOT throwing up despite feeling like I had to for most of it and otherwise being lazy (nothing gets done on Sundays!).

Monday was my last day in uni for my master's course, we had one quite short lecture in the morning. I saw 'my new best friend' again and she forced me (well not really, I just felt like it) to leave campus early rather than having to yell at her to LEAVE ME ALONE!!! There is a longer story behind this particular near-overreaction, but I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it so will leave it for the ears of a registered mental health professional. I'll concentrate on the fact that there's no more uni for me till January 18th (YAY) but with a  bus load of work to do in the meantime (not so yay). Another highlight this week was the St. John Ambulance London Links Christmas Ball on Wednesday. A great evening for all the SJA units from all the London universities to come together and celebrate the time of year and the past 12 months over Christmas Dinner, complementary wine and some questionable dancing.  I've always really enjoyed these nights and as this was my 3rd SJA Ball and probably my last, I'm extremely happy I went and shared it with some awesome people.

Speaking of awesome people, my parents jetted of to Malaga for 4 days early on Thursday morning (they left at 3am for a 5am flight!!), leaving the house to me, my brother and my sister. Although I would have loved to join them for the warmer weather, I think their anniversary is more important :) I must say the house is a lot quieter so far which is understandable considering that all my parents watch is extremely loud, over dramatic Nollywood (Nigerian Hollywood) films on the tv. For those of you who haven't experienced these films...errrm....you're in for an interesting time if/when you TV do.

Methinks you've heard enough for one week, hope you all have a great 7 days.

Terrible week

I have decided to write in black this week to express my boredom and frustration. I had a cold two weeks ago which I might have mentioned to some of you. Then it got better last week and guess what, it came back again this monday worse than before! Now I can barely talk, coughing like an 80 year old man and probably acting like one too from this illness. Nonetheless, I tried to be not a wimp and went to work for the week, what do I get in return? A B*LL*CKING!

Some of you may want to know what the story was. Well, I had to fill in a form to apply for a personal license to work with animals after I passed the exam. I filled in the old version, which after almost 30 minutes examination, I finally noticed the difference between the old one and the new one. THE LOGO OF HOME OFFICE IS DIFFERENT!!! Other than that, all the questions and answers and layouts are IDENTICAL. Why do I need to get b*ll*cked for that?! Anyways, my week thus far has been very relaxing as I am waiting for a lot of stuff to grow and I am just wasting my life away in front of the computer "reading" scientific articles (with facebook scrabbles in the background of course).

However, despite the annoyance, I got the approval of my supervisor's wife (who is also a scientist) that I am so good at this one technique, she has sent 2 of her undergrad students and a postdoc to learn from me (also because the one who knows how to do it in her lab is too busy to teach them).

P.S. The exchange student from Thai keeps on smacking my bum for some reason!

Maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me.

Sorry this post is late this week but i have literally not had a chance to stop!
My week has been so up and down, had 5 coursework deadlines today alone; 3 pathology essays, presentation and a cancer biology essay
One word to sum up my mood?
EXHAUSTED

But i shall not let that stop me from i
nforming you of my week :)

Sooo whats been agwanning with me....?
Nothing especially out of the ordinary sad but true but a few stories to hopefully entice you to come back and read some more.

Had a presentation today which was okay, was with ian hart so you can imagine i did my utmost to appear presentable and to know my stuff.
I did also however make me el oh el which kinda made my wwek tbh.

Yesterday, oh em gees Benny! i saw an umbilical cord and thought immediately of you!! i wasn't looking for endothelial cell extraction though but doing histochemistry and resections to try and see what the mutation in the ladies baby was. sadly no pictures though :( Was soooo awesome but my favourite part was resecting and markation of the cancer within the liver. was so interesting and from doing that i know that this is what i want to do with my future career.
Also, the guy runs some good projects so hopefully i may get to do one with him, the only downside would be that his specialty is in penile cancers.
Now dear readers, as some of you may know i can be mature when i want to be. But when he said that i did have a little giggle. Okay well maybe a bit more of a belly laugh but i am allowed a moment of immaturity every now and again :p

i also received a letter from student finance informing me that i have to pay back the money i owe :O give me a breeak! i barely have enough money to top up my oyster card atm!!

I may have told some of you about the friend that got in contact recently who told me how i had improved since i was 16. i say friend but i use the term loosely but you catch my drift.
WELL, friday get a call at 4.30am (okay so technically was saturday but thats besides the point) asking me to drive to his house and keep him company. Now you can imagine my reply and promptly went back to sleep.
Saturday night me and caitriona had a lovely catch up and a drink and busted some dance moves that cut the carpet and rolled out of the cab approx 5am. ALL IN ALL A GOOD NIGHT. However on my way home i gets a phone call asking for company again and when i said i was on my way home his reply was ill see you there.
So not believeing he would be i stepped out of the cab and low and behold who is on my doorstep?? yep you have guessed it. Him!
After a slightly urgent whispered conversation (as my parents room is at the front of the house) i discovered he wanted me to come home with him. I eventually got him in a cab and he left (Alone, i know i want a bf but still that is soo not the way to go about it)

which brings me nicely to our weekly segment. Forever alone.
Oh em gee there is a new guy that works in the office on campus. His name is Tom and by holy jesus he must be about 7ft tall!! but also very very cute

Ho hum thats enough for this week i think

Song of the week: Maverick Sabre's cover of Wonderwall
This guy has the best accent its like a mix between 'gangster' and irish. absolutely awesome.
Food of the week: edible glitter

Love hugs etc etc

Wednesday's Weekly Word

My fellow bloggers,

What once more as happened? A few glimmers of interest may be gleamed from this past week.

I fell foul of full blown flu on Thursday last which has been with me since. As you can imagine most of this week has consisted of string at the ceiling, the inside of my duvet or the inside of my eyelids! I won't bore you with any more details than that ;o)

I did however manage to get to see my Dotty Lotty this week and we had a lovely time catching up and having a yummy meal together.

I would normally try and drag more of a post out of this week however, I still feel like death warmed up so I'm going back to bed ttfn!

Define "Boyfriend"......

Hidi-ho my darlings!!

Good News! Tomorrow is my last day waking up at 6am to make it into firms until after christmas break AND even better than that it is MY LAST day with mario and luigi.... YAAAAY!!!!! ^.^

So last week while Jess was catching the eye of hot koreans on the dance floor (and pushing them away... oy vey!). I was struggling to think of a way to introduce my "friend" Gavin. Now at that point we were really only just friends but somehow over the last week things have escalated ever so slightly and now we are "more than friends" but not quite anything exclusive or specific in nature. This is mainly due to me. I'm not very comfortable with the whole idea of being some one's "girlfriend" or calling some one my "boyfriend". I think the problem is there's no term of a relationship that is in the in-between stages! The English language is like a kazillion years old (more or less) and YET I've yet to find a word for "he's not my boyfriend but he's not not my boyfriend"!!! BUT REALLY GUYS GAVIN IS NOT MY BOYFRIEND!!!!!!

Now Maddy I know I promise you a picture of me with Gavin BUT we've never actually taken a picture alone together or funnily enough it turns out not even one with us being next to each other except for this one!!! The picture above is Gavin, Me, Met, Kelly and Chris (L-R)

That being said he does some really cute things though! For example, I was having a super poopie day on Tuesday and he cooked me dinner. He's actually pretty decent at the whole cooking thing and it's really cute that when we eat he always shares his food with me and when he serves himself something he thinks I'll like he'll put it on my plate first!

Friday I had dinner with our very own Madz before heading to to Tamsin's party! It was really nice, that is both dinner and tamsin's (well I enjoyed the 20 minutes I was there before I had to go back home!). I spent most of my time with Mark (Simpson) debating the existence of "gay face". I dunno about you guys but with this whole metro-sexual "super skinny jeans" "I embrace my feminine side" thing that boys are doing these days my gay-dar has given up and gone on holiday!!!! :s lol

Now Alex I really must introduce you to my future husband and love of my eternal life (yes it can only be) DANIEL "SEX-ON-LEGS" HENNEY!!!! Seriously is he not worth a hula hula dance or two?!

I have like 3 essays due in tomorrow and I've done like NONE of them at all so I'll have to leave brunch at the Malaysian Hall for next week.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE SOME OF YOU GUYS AT THE SJA BALL ON WEDNESDAY AND HOPEFULLY SATURDAY TOO!!!!!! ^.^

P.s. Talkig about Robin Williams, I'm watching Hook right now and the little black kid is giving RW the once over to figure out if he's Peter pan or not and it really cracks me up cause my little nephew does the same thing when he meets strangers! It's one of those looks that says "Do something to impress me or remain a toad forever in my eyes". Luckily he's not the brightest bulb and putting on space toons (arabic channel) is enough to win him over! GOD BLESS TV!!! lol

Laughing at cancer

HELLO HELLO HELLO everyone, how are you all?

I've been tardy with our visits, but I will endeavour to do better from now on. As such it feels like an age since we were sat here, can it really just be seven or so days? It's now December for pete's sake! 23 days till Christmas ( I know I know, I don't like the countdowns either but it was included for self-indulgent emphasis). For some reason I feel all hopeful and optimistic about the coming month, not all out festive yet but just markedly more cheery.

Having said that it's been a mixed bag of week: set off brilliantly last Saturday by my friend Vee's surprise 22nd birthday party. Arranged, set up and executed, all under her nose. 4 weeks in the making and it was all worth it when she walked into the room to a MASSIVE concordant cry of SURPRRRIIISSSSEEE!!!!
Vee was practically knocked off her feet in amazement and then she started to cry tears of utter joy. She really was not expecting anything. I do love it when a plan comes together *cue A Team theme tune* :D
Similar to Simone's 21st a few weeks bcak this was night filled with good music, old friends and lots of delicious food (provided by the Vee's boyfriend's dad who runs a catering company, yum yum). Unlike Simone's party I managed to rein it in a little with the old liquor and not have a splitting headache the next morning. WIN!

As for my working week (which is what I call my time at uni), it was pretty uneventful. I completed the 2 week lab practical, which may be a cause for celebration were it not for the 3000-5000 word write up I have to do over Christmas. Oh joy :/ I do enjoy my course most of the time and when I don't I can see it as worthwhile. Socially, I feel I've been handicapped by still not living close by at all but hopefully I will get something after the holidays.
On Wednesday I had the pleasure of taking a friend of mine to see 50/50, a film dubbed as a dark comedy about that most unfunny of things, cancer. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead role as Adam and Seth Rogen, who is BLOODY BRILLIANT in this, as his best friend Kyle. Now I'm not one for impromptu film reviews, but both me and my friend (who some of you may know as spoken word artist/rapper Tammy T) really enjoyed the 100mins we spent in the cinema. I found it funny throughout, which is no mean feat considering the subject matters of aggressive malignant cancer, love, loss and death, all of these are dealt with with an honesty and truth which makes the laughs genuine, rich and naturally. This, however, is not an all out comedy, far from it, there are some truly poignant moments. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to you all.
Side note, Joseph Gordon-Levitt always does good work on screen. Which makes me wonder all the more about G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra .....

Friday (which is today right) will see me attending the aforementioned Tammy T's birthday party, one of my top 5 things I was looking forward to from last week. I suppose more on that when we catch up next time,

Get home safe.

No way! I'm covered in blood....OF AN UNKNOWN WOMAN!

Yes, as the title suggests (or explicitly states), I was covered in the blood of a random woman. Now, some of you who are more dirty minded, may have jumped to a different conclusion than the REAL story I was about to tell. But the dirty minded people reading this, don't worry, you are not the first one and certainly won't be the last.

Here I was yesterday afternoon, minding my own business, doing my usual tissue culture and PCR when I got a phone call from the hospital that they have an umbilical cord for me. I was kind of hoping the cord would come last Monday, not Wednesday, as that was what the midwife promised me. But anyway, I was having a relatively relaxed day and hoped to go home early for once before I was told I had to pick up "my cord" immediately. I was thinking, "That is not my cord thank you very much" (for the strange people reading this blog and don't know me, I'm not a woman). So, yesterday, as you can probably tell already, I wasn't really in the mood for a cord. But anyway, as one of the few people trained in the lab to extract endothelial cells from an umbilical cord in the lab, I had to do it. So, I scrubed up, put on my gloves, face mask and hair net (ok, not the face mask or hair net, those were slightly exaggerated), I went on and did the procedure. Afterwards, after I took off my lab coat and gloves, I have found numerous spots of blood on my hoody. Somehow, the blood went passed the plastic screen and my lab coat and have stained up my hoody. Sad times.

Here's a picture of an umbilical cord if you are wondering what it looks like (ladies, you may ask to see and keep your own when you have given birth).
P.S. It is very rubbery and slippery
I must say, other than that, the week hasn't been too bad for me. I went out to the vet school of bristol univeristy WAAAY out in the countryside (signal bar of my phone decreased as the journey went on, literally. I had no signal by the time I got there). Organised secret santa for after the christmas meal for my lab and currently in the thought process of what to buy this person. He's developed something called the lady gaga model for jokes, so I'm thinking of something Lady Gaga related. Any suggestions are welcome!
